A sag mill is a type of grinding mill that utilizes steel balls in addition to large rocks for grinding, A rotating drum throws large rocks and steel balls in a cataracting motion which causes impact breakage of larger rocks and compressive grinding of finer particles, by using the method of attrition to weaken the material, it then causes grinding of finer particles. The inside of the sag mill is lined with plates to lift the material up and around the inside of the mill, where it then falls off the plates and back down.
